As shoe makers, the family of Birkenstock goes back to 1774. In 1897 Johann Birkenstock's descendent Konrad, pioneered an original and revolutionary orthopedic footbed design. The concept was simple...the shape of the shoe should match the shape of the foot! And viola, the Birkenstock footbed was born. Then in 1964, Karl Birkenstock, grandson of Konrad offered his family's famous contoured footbed in the form of ready-to-wear sandals.
