After a call for donations for Haitians from Soles4Souls, locally owned Comfort Shoe
Specialists collected more than 1300 pairs of footwear. The 80 cartons were picked
up 1/28/10 with help from Birkenstock, USA, paying for shipping. “This is true
partnership with one of our best vendors, Birkenstock, offering to pay the shipping
to Soles4Souls. Our customers and St. Louisans came through in a big way to offer
protective footwear, many for children. Especially now, protective footwear is
needed to help our Caribbean neighbors to clean up and rebuild their capital,” says
Edith James, certified pedorthist and founder of Comfort Shoe Specialists.
“Our hearts break for a population already reeling from a series of natural disasters
and abject poverty. My first thought when seeing the news reports was “Haiti,
again? There couldn't possibly be a worse place for such a disaster.’ And it's true --
this country already ranks among the very last in economic opportunity and
experiences widespread poverty. In the past few years it has been hit with four
large hurricanes, several deadly floods and now a monster earthquake,” said Wayne
Elsey, Founder and CEO.
